Naira depreciates against USD at forex market

  For the first time since last week, the Naira depreciated marginally against the US dollar on the foreign exchange market on Tuesday. Data from FMDQ showed that the Naira dropped to N1,615.94 per USD on Tuesday from N1,582.94 on Monday. This represents an N30 or 2.0 per cent depreciation compared to the N1,582.94 recorded at the close of trading on Monday. Meanwhile, the Naira exchanged for N1,618.489 per USD on Tuesday at the parallel market from an average of N1,600 on Monday. The FX rate at both foreign exchange markets showed that the margin had shrunk to N2.5. DAILY POST recalls that Naira had continued its appreciation trend on Monday.   The Central Bank of Nigeria has announced its decision to sell foreign exchange worth $20,000 to each eligible Bureau De Change operator across the country.  This comes over two years after former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, stopped the sales of foreign exchange to BDC operators.  The apex bank disclosed this in a new circular issued and signed by the Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Hassan Mahmud, on Tuesday, Feb. 27.  The circular is titled “Sale of Foreign Exchange to Bureau de Change Operators to Meet Retail Demand for Eligible Invisible Transactions”.   The Federal Ministry of Works on Monday announced that both bounds of the carriageways of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State will be closed to traffic from noon on Wednesday to noon on Thursday. Mrs Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen. Kesha explained that the total closure was in continuation of the ongoing rehabilitation works on the bridge. “Consequently, the bridge would not be opened to traffic during this critical 24-hour period. “Thus, all road users are advised to use alternative routes during this period. Please note that all inconveniences are highly regretted,” the statement read. Motorists are advised to cooperate with the traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic to ensure hitch-free movements during the period.   The Federal Government has banned the exportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, popularly called cooking gas, in a bid to increase its volume domestically to warrant a crash in price. It stated on Thursday that LPG producers in Nigeria and key stakeholders in the industry had been told to stop exporting the commodity out of Nigeria, following the recent jump in the cost of cooking gas. Findings showed that the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and some other states had climbed to about N18,000. It was specifically N17,500 in Abuja on Thursday, a product that sold for less than N9,000 in November last year. LPG dealers under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers had predicted mid-last year that a 12.5kg cylinder would cost N18,000 going by the incessant hikes in its cost. We Reject New IPPIS – ASUU

  The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka zone, on Tuesday rejected the emergence of a new Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS). Our correspondent reports that ASUU over the past four years had a running battle with the Federal Government over IPPIS, a payment platform which the union argued negates university autonomy. Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Raphael Amokaha, while briefing journalists in Makurdi on a text entitled, “Let The Lecturers Breath”, said it was disturbing that soon after the present federal government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the immediate removal of universities from the IPPIS, an introduction of a new one has surfaced. Amokaha said the news by the president through the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had directed the immediate removal of universities from IPPIS and was received with delight by the union. “Regrettably, this directive is yet to be complied with. 9 Killed On Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Accident

  At least nine persons died on Tuesday while seven others sustained injuries in an accident along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. Our correspondent gathered that the accident occurred around 8:am, involving a truck and a Mazda bus at Kere bridge along the highway. The Spokesperson, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Tuesday. Okpe said it was caused by speeding and route violation which led to a head-on collision between the truck without registration number and the bus marked SMK 808 YD. She said 17 persons were involved comprising seven men, nine women and one female child. “A total of seven persons were injured which comprised five women, one man and one female child. “Unfortunately nine persons were recorded dead from the crash which comprised five men and four women,” she said. PHOTOS: Residents Stranded As Flood Takes Over Lagos Communities

  Many residents are reportedly stranded following about six-hour rainfall that submerged many houses in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos. The rain which started around 6am on Tuesday most parts of the metropolis, took over streets and bridges. The flood also impeded vehicular movement. The most affected communites include Abule-Egba, Command, Agege and Egbeda areas of Lagos. Emergency responders from both the state and federal government agencies were on the ground to rescue the trapped victims. Ibrahim Farinloye, Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South West, confirmed the situation. He advised residents of Command Area to take alternative routes, when going out, by avoiding Command and the near areas as flood has overrun the bridge in the neighbourhood. “NEMA, fire service and police are working to get trapped people out of the area,” he added.
