A West Ham spokesman said:

“West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days.

“Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery. The club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

The Hammers squad showed solidarity by wearing Antonio’s shirt during warm-ups before their 2-1 victory over Wolves in the Premier League on Monday night.

Both Jarrod Bowen and Tomáš Soucek dedicated their goals on the night to the 34-year-old striker.

Fans also flooded social media with messages of support, hailing Antonio as a club legend.

Since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances and was instrumental in the club’s Europa Conference League triumph in 2023.

Antonio faces at least a year out of football as he recovers from his injuries. Speculation about his playing future looms, with insiders fearing retirement may potentially be on the cards.

Meanwhile, police are still appealing for witnesses to the crash on Sunday.
