JUST IN: Labour rejects FG’s fresh ₦60,000 wage offer, Insists on ₦494,000

The ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers before the May 31st deadline has suffered another major setback.


This is even as labour leaders in the country have again rejected a fresh minimum wage proposal by the federal government.


At the meeting on Tuesday, May 28, the organised labour turned down the ₩60,000 offer by the government.


The organised labour comprises of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).


Meanwhile, the Organised Labour also shifted grounds from its #497,000 stance last week to N494,000.


A member of the Tripartite Committee for the negotiation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers made this known during the ongoing meeting.


The government had initially proposed #48,000 and N54,000 last week, which were also rejected by the Organised Labour.


It then proposed the sum of N57,000 but labour leaders turned down the offer.


The Organised Labour had also presented N615,000 as the new minimum wage but saw reasons to drop their demand from to N497,000 last week and then to #494,000 on Tuesday.


There are growing concerns that the Tripartite Committee for the negotiation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers is yet to agree on a new minimum wage just about three days before the May 31 deadline.


Labour unions have been mobilizing members for massive protests across the country should the federal government fail to agree on a new minimum wage before the deadline.
