Dangote’s Net Worth hits $28B as Refinery project sails

Image
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has seen his wealth more than double to $28 billion following the long-awaited opening of his Nigerian oil refinery, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The refinery is the world’s largest single-train facility, capable of processing a broad range of global crude types. It represents a monumental investment for Dangote, who has financed the $20 billion project largely through his own fortune. The 67-year-old Nigerian industrialist now presides over one of Africa’s most ambitious private ventures, a refinery that promises to alter Nigeria’s energy landscape. By producing refined petroleum products domestically, the facility could eliminate the country’s dependence on fuel imports, a reliance that has hamstrung its economy despite Nigeria being Africa’s largest crude oil producer. Yet Dangote, whose primary fortune was built on cement, is quick to acknowledge the challenges. “I didn’t know what we were building was a monster,” he said in

T-Pain, the nickname, popularised on social media, symbolises the growing discontent with the Nigerian government's performance under President Bola Tinubu. Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) have vowed to continue referring to President Bola Tinubu as "T-Pain" if his administration fails to address the growing hardship in the country.   T-Pain, the nickname, popularised on social media, symbolises the growing discontent with the Nigerian government's performance under President Bola Tinubu. The nickname for President Tinubu came from a satirical remix of T-Pain’s track ‘Buy U A Drank’ by Nigerian satirist Bello Galadanci, best known by his stage name Dan Bello. ‘Buy U A Drank’ was released in 2007 by American singer and songwriter Faheem Rashad Najm, known professionally as T-Pain. Brazil orders closure of 2,000 betting sites

Image
Brazilian authorities on Friday began closing down more than 2,000 betting sites, including those that sponsor popular football team Corinthians and other first-division clubs, as part of a push to regulate online gambling. Latin America’s biggest economy is struggling with what Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has called a betting “pandemic,” prompting the government to tighten the screws on the sector. Since 2018, when Brazil legalized sports betting sites, online gambling has operated in a regulatory free-for-all, subject to virtually no rules or taxes. Some of the most popular sites take bets on sporting fixtures, but Brazilians have also become hooked on gambling games like Aviator, where players gamble on the flight of a virtual airplane, or the online casino game Fortune Tiger. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government has called time on sites that failed to sign up to new regulations due to take effect in January. The new rules seek to combat fraud and money laundering
